
In 1985, Peter G. Peterson and Stephen A. Schwarzman founded The Blackstone Group with a shared secretary and a balance sheet of $400,000. Blackstone is now a leading global alternative asset manager and provider of financial advisory services listed on the New York Stock Exchange (ticket symbol BX) with total assets under management of $113.5 billion as of March 31, 2008. There headquarters is in New York and they have offices in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Paris, Mumbai, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
Blackstone is an experienced and active investor in the energy sector, /including investments in Premcor, /inc., one of the largest independent refiners of petroleum products in the U.S. prior to its acquisition by Valero (NYSE:VLO) in 2005; Texas Genco, a Houston-based wholesale electric power generating company prior to it's acquisition by NRG Energy in 2006; Foundation Coal (NYSE: FCL), a U.S. coal mining company; and Kosmos Energy, an oil exploration company. The firm has raised a total of approximately $47 billion for alternative asset investing s/ince its formation. Over $27 billion of that has been for private equity investing, /including Blackstone Capital Partners V, an institutional private equity fund of $13.5 billion.
