- 1000 MW combined cycle gas fired plant
- Provides significant support to the Italy's electric network
- 90% less water consumption versus comparable facilities
- Provides nearly 1000 skilled jobs at peak construction
- Increases the tax base of Teramo and surrounding communities
The Sithe Global Italia ("SGI") project is a 1000 MW combined cycle, natural gas fueled power plant located in the city of Teramo in the region of Abruzzo, Italy. The project site is optimally located adjacent to a new 345 kV substation owned by the transmission company Terna and a high pressure gas pipeline operated by a subsidiary of Edison, Spa. The highly efficient power facility will provide significant support to Italy's electric network which is in need of new capacity to replace old outdated facilities and to satisfy the energy demands of the growing Italian economy.
The project is configured with two 330 MW advanced technology combustion turbines, two heat recovery steam generators and a 350 MW steam turbine. The project will use an air cooled condenser which will reduce water consumption by 90% compared to traditional wet cooling systems. Cooling of the combustion turbine inlets along with supplementary firing of the heat recovery steam generators will provide high efficiency and output over a broad range of ambient conditions.
By utilizing the most advanced combustion turbine technology including a new "dry low NOx" combustion system, the project will be amongst the cleanest and most efficient power plants in Europe. The close proximity of the electrical substation and gas pipeline will maximize the use of existing infrastructure and minimize the impacts to the surrounding area. The plant is designed to set new standards of efficiency, reliability and emissions control which will result in a highly competitive project that will contribute to the advancement of the recently deregulated electricity market in Italy.
Benefits to the surrounding community
The project will require an investment of hundreds of millions of euros in the region of Abruzzo providing many direct and indirect economic benefits to the community and to the Italian economy. During the three year construction period the project will provide hundreds of skilled construction jobs peaking at nearly 1000 during the most active periods. The project will infuse millions of euros into the local economy through procurement of goods and services during construction, thus creating and supporting many more local jobs. After construction the plant will be operated by a highly skilled staff of 35 to 45 people with an annual payroll exceeding 3 million euro. In addition, millions of euros per year will be spent locally for goods and services to support the operation of the plant.
The project will greatly increase the tax base of the city of Teramo and other surrounding communities by contributing millions of euros per year. The project will encourage new industrial development in the area by providing reliable and competitively priced electricity to the region. Sithe Global is proud to bring this important investment to the Abruzzo community and looks forward to actively supporting community affairs and charitable programs.
