Southdown Station is an 800 MW (nominal net output) natural gas fuelled combined cycle generating station proposed for a "greenfield" site in Mississauga, Ontario, west of Toronto, Ontario. Development of the facility was initiated in response to the opening of Ontario's competitive electricity market and in anticipation of meeting critical need for new electricity supply in the greater Toronto area. The project is strategically located to supply voltage support to the heavily developed south Mississauga/west Toronto area of Ontario's electric grid.
The project will utilize Mitsubishi Power System's MHI 501G combustion gas turbines in a 2x1 configuration. Developed in close consultation with community stakeholders, the project has incorporated a variety of environmental mitigation commitments. By incorporating selective catalytic reduction technology to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides, the plant will be among the country's cleanest. An air-cooled condenser will be used, reducing water consumption by 95% compared to facilities utilizing conventional evaporative cooling towers. Extensive noise mitigation will be included to avoid disturbing residential areas and the project site is designed to incorporate extensive landscaping. Sithe Global has also committed to a long-term stakeholder advisory relationship with the community, and is playing an active role in the development of air quality monitoring and improvement initiatives with other industries in the surrounding area.
The project has received virtually all approvals required to begin construction. Sithe Global is pursuing long-term power sales opportunities for the project so that it may enter into construction. It is projected that the facility will enter operation within about three years of entering into such a long term power purchase commitment.
