Goreway Station is an 875 MW (nominal net output)
natural gas fuelled combined cycle generating station under construction
on a “greenfield” site in Brampton, Ontario, a rapidly
developing suburb northwest of Toronto. The facility is being implemented
pursuant to a long-term Accelerated Clean Energy Supply agreement
(essentially a contract for differences that provides for a minimum
amount of cash flow if the project achieves the relevant contract
conditions) with the Ontario Power Authority. Under the terms of
the agreement, the project will participate in the competitive electricity
market administered by Ontario’s Independent Electricity System
Operator.
The project will utilize General Electric’s Frame 7FB combustion
gas turbines in a 3x1 configuration. The facility will be the largest
combined cycle installation in Canada. By incorporating selective
catalytic reduction technology to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides,
the plant will also be among the country’s cleanest. An air-cooled
condenser will be used, reducing water consumption by 95% compared
to facilities utilizing conventional evaporative cooling towers.
To meet Ontario’s urgent need to strengthen the electricity
supply for the greater Toronto area, the construction of the facility
is scheduled so as to allow commissioning of the three gas turbines
in simple cycle mode by June 2007. The balance of the combined cycle
plant will continue to be built through to completion by July 1,
2008.
